We are a small, authentic, fast-growing company run by people with a genuine and deep passion for what we do. Design and development is done in-house, and we take full ownership of what we produce. At NEMO, we are constantly evolving, improving ourselves, our process, and ultimately our products. We work in a collaborative environment where teamwork and results rule the day.

The Position:

At NEMO, Adventure Anywhere™ is our motto and “design like you give a damn” is our creed. The Product Team at NEMO consists of motivated designers and engineers that consistently bring innovative products to market. We are seeking a talented Product Engineer Intern to help our team complete the current development cycle and potentially join our team permanently. Product design is critical to our mission and we need someone capable and with significant potential. The term of the Internship is for 6 months with the potential to be hired on full time at the end of the internship for an exceptional individual.

The Intern will work closely with experienced designers and engineers on the Product Team developing an array of products while also focusing on a project with a large degree of ownership. We are a small and fast-paced team, so the Intern needs to be able to manage multiple projects at once and nimbly change direction when the need arises. As the Intern, you will learn project management, product design, and how to bring a product to market. The role will span across product categories, including tents, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, and furniture. You will also participate in the product development cycle: from initial brainstorming, to proof of concept models, to CAD prototypes, and creating manufacturing specifications for example. The essence of the role is to work on technical aspects of product design, development, and production to help bring innovative products to market efficiently. The best fit will be someone with technical training, hands-on experience, a serious attention to detail, and ability to produce results quickly.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical contributions to product management throughout the entire product lifecycle.
  • Participate in company and product team outings to experience gear as it is used in the field.
  • Contribute to product brainstorming sessions.
  • Solve basic physics problems to validate concepts.
  • Produce CAD models based on design direction and sketches.
  • Troubleshoot designs to understand how a product might fail, the likelihood of failure, and the potential risk posed to the consumer.
  • Propose design changes to mitigate risk.
  • Create finite element models to analyze designs and then interpret the output and provide guidance to product managers.
  • Prototype designs using basic materials for scale models, internal and external capabilities for functional models, and 3D printing for rapid looks-like/works-like models.
  • Develop an understanding of manufacturing techniques and recommend design-for-manufacturing changes to products.
  • Create technical specifications for products.
  • Review factory samples and final product for compliance to specifications and requirements.
  • Use engineering studies to suggest improvements to product design.

  • Graduating in Spring ‘19 or a recent graduate from a college program with a focus in science or engineering.
  • Passion for the outdoors and outdoor gear.
  • Experience with computer aided design or some form of technical drawing.
  • Experience with finite element modeling or physical modeling to test performance.
  • Proficiency with standard computer programs such as Microsoft Office for general computing purposes, and computer programs for numerical calculations such as Excel or Mathematica.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail-oriented, diligent, and meticulous.
  • Team-oriented and collaborative.
  • Strong written and oral communication.
  • Must read, speak, write, and understand the English language.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Proven ability to invent mechanical devices and create functioning mechanical devices by hand.
  • Creative problem solving to bring innovative solutions to technical challenges.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work independently under general direction; able to meaningfully add to group discussions and work sessions.
  • Able to thrive in a deadline driven environment, while managing multiple projects at once.
  • Intermediate to advanced skill with hand sketching, CAD/FEA, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • General working knowledge of mechanical hardware, materials, fabrics and construction methods.
  • Ability to use strong reasoning, quantitative data, and good judgment in making decisions.

This job description is not all-inclusive and is only intended to describe the general nature of the work. All job responsibilities and requirements are essential to performing the role.
